Concept
We welcome you to a pre-meeting in Espoo, the city of rural heritage and technological future where Finland’s international theatre has its home: & Espoo Theatre.
& and Culture Espoo will host you in the best of ways. During the one and a half day pre-meeting trip, you will get insights into Helsinki capital region’s most interesting performing arts companies and productions. We will also dig deeper into the problems of self-censorship within the artistic community - why are we not louder, as artists, when the world is burning? And of course, we will have a proper sauna moment before setting off to Oulu on Monday morning. Welcome to Espoo!

18:30-20:30 Performance: JUMPPATYTÖT (THE GYMNASTICS GIRLS)
by Katariina Havukainen, Inkeri Hyvönen and Ella Lahdenmäki at &Louhi, Espoo Culture Centre
If there was one defining phenomenon on the Finnish theatre scene in 2024-2025, it was Jumppatytöt. Produced by the small Helsinki-based Theatre Takomo in spring 2024, the performance was created on zero budget for the gym hall of a school and was originally scheduled for only seven performances. By the end of 2025, however, the show will have toured across Finland with close to 100 performances and well over 10,000 viewers. Jumppatytöt was also in & Espoo Theatre’s repertoire during autumn 2025.
Jumppatytöt is a three-performer piece about group gymnastics and girlhood. Katariina Havukainen, Inkeri Hyvönen and Ella Lahdenmäki are all former “gymnasts,” and the work is based on their personal experiences and reflections on the joy of team sports and the sense of belonging they create, but also on invisibility, pain, exclusion and competition. The piece grows into a societal statement in a gentle yet compelling and persuasive way.
The performance language is Finnish, with subtitles in English. Artistic team: Katariina Havukainen, Inkeri Hyvönen, Ella Lahdenmäki, Antton Laine, Roy Boswell, Oscar Fagerudd, Heikki Paasonen
21:00 Dinner at the restaurant Fat Lizard. Dinner will be provided at no additional cost.

14:00-15:00 Guided tour of EMMA, followed by coffee and a welcome from the EMMA team
15:00-15:30 Overview from Director of Culture Espoo, Susanna Tommila
15:30-17:00 Panel discussion: WHY DO WE SHUT UP? – on self-censorship in the arts and the mechanisms of keeping quiet.
In the Nordic countries, we thought we were free to express ourselves. We thought public funding saved us from censorship and the traps of capitalism and corruption. However, with the far-right movements taking more space in the political and cultural arenas, artists in the Nordic countries are no longer sure of that freedom. Even if the authorities do not censor the content, there seems to be a tendency among leaders of arts organisations to keep quiet and hold back. They are careful not to provoke anyone or break the apparent consensus. The panel will discuss cases of institutional censorship vs. self-censorship, threats against artists in the Nordics, as well as mechanisms to notice the fine lines of censorship within the cultural field. ”
Moderator: Jussi Sorjanen, Artistic Director, & Espoo Theatre
17:00 Travel to Aalto University’s sauna
18:00 Sauna at Aalto University’s sauna with catering and barbecue. Barbecue and drinks will be provided at no additional cost.
