Pre-meeting trip to Novi Sad [FULL]

Meeting point: Pionirski Park (Public parking)

Address: Dragoslava Jovanovica 2, located across the street from the National Assembly.

Join us on this pre-meeting trip to Novi Sad, organised in collaboration with Novi Sad 2022 - European Capital of Culture, one day prior to the IETM Belgrade Plenary Meeting.

This is an all day trip to discover Novi Sad’s vibrant cultural scene.

You will have the chance to learn both about the independent performing arts scene and institutional theatre production.

Important practicalities

Taking part in the pre-meeting trip requires you to arrive in Belgrade on Wednesday 27 September, in order to be able to travel to Novi Sad and be ready to leave the next morning. Don’t forget to bring comfortable shoes and wind/waterproofs. You will also need a rucksack to carry a water bottle and a reusable coffee mug, if you have one.

Please note that eating times may differ from country to country. In Serbia, lunch is usually eaten around 15:00. This being said, we have planned for enough snacks and breaks in case you need to replenish before lunchtime.

Programme
08:30 - 09:30 Departure from Belgrade and travel to Novi Sad
10:00 - 11:00

Visit to Liman Cultural Station & Exchange with the Novi Sad 2022 - European Capital of Culture team

To kick off this pre-meeting trip, we will visit the future Creative District of Novi Sad and discover the cultural offer of the Novi Sad 2022 Capital of Culture programme.

This performance has been produced as part of the EYEnet 2.0 project (European Youth Engagement Network), with the aim of improving the quality of youth culture, political awareness, critical thinking and the international solidarity of young people.

The project contains one workshop and eight festivals in - Novi Sad (Serbia), Prague (Czech Republic), Sansepolcro (Italy), Maribor-Ptuj (Slovenia), Athens (Greece), Toulouse-Clermont Ferrand (France), Berlin (Germany) and Kaunas (Lithuania).

Price: Performance included in the pre-meeting participation fee.

13:30 - 14:30

Meet the independent local scene

Location : Zmaj Jovina 22, Novi Sad

In the afternoon, we will continue to learn more about Novi Sad’s key projects and contexts by meeting with representatives of Šok Zadruga; just a few of the people that make up the city’s independent arts scene.

Šok Zadruga (Shock Cooperative) is a project from the Multimedia Center Led Art. Šok Zadruga is based on an attempt to change the existing pattern of artistic action primarily at a local level - the level of Novi Sad - through a kind of ‘in-vivo’ experiment. With the idea of revitalising the peripheral parts of the city in cooperation and association with culture, sports societies or religious communities, Šok Zadruga - in addition to its parent gallery - founded and built the Shock Gallery chain. The so-called micro galleries promote a new exhibition concept and a new form of cooperation between artists and art associations, and represents an experimental attempt which gives the association and exchange of experiences in the field of contemporary visual art. In that light, The Šok Zadruga redefines the given institutional and disciplinary frameworks, and formulates newer, ‘wilder’ ones with unconventional models of cooperation. The centre is replaced by its periphery, and the basement by its public space. The acute crisis of sociability, thinned social fabric and devastated artistic scenes warns of the urgent need to rehabilitate elementary forms of reciprocity, self-organisation and mutual completion.

14:30 - 16:30  Afternoon break

We will have two hours of free time where you can walk around and discover the city.

16:30 - 18:30

Late Lunch / Early dinner

Location: Pivnica Gusan, Zmaj Jovina 4, Novi Sad

This will be our main meal of the day. Try some of the local cuisine and share a communal moment with the group.

Please ensure you have updated your dietary restrictions on your IETM profile.

19:00 - 20:30

Neoplanta, directed by András Urbán

A production of Újvidéki Színház (Novi Sad Theatre)

Location: Novi Sad Theatre, Jovana Subotica St. No. 3, Novi Sad

Performance in Hungarian with English subtitles.

There is this city, this Újvidék.
Or Novi Sad. Or Neusatz. Or Mlada Loza. Or Neoplanta. This is how Maria Theresa wrote history with her golden pen.
Streets, squares, the Danube, people, peoples, twenty-six nations, explosively growing buildings, dark parks, graffiti, a fashion show of hatred. And the blood. Blood on the asphalt, blood in well-known restaurants and pubs, blood smeared on the ice of the Danube and yoghurt dripping from the windows of the Báni palace.
Neoplanta.
The identity of a city, with spots.

In András Urbán's words, this “is not only about Novi Sad, it is not based only on Végel 's novel which is about History. The production tells a story which offers inspiration for a new space, a space in which people are trying to live. We have an image of this environment as a multicultural one but it is time to face up to that other image which does not have that. We boast about notions, multiculturalism and interculturalism when we need them. But we should also start to speak about the real Novi Sad and there the question arises straightaway: which is the real Novi Sad?”

Duration: 1 hour 30 min

Price: Performance included in the pre-meeting participation fee.

Take the opportunity to meet with Cultural Actors in rural areas. Ask them questions, talk about their challenges, understand their experiences in working in non-urban areas and learn from other contexts. Sit back and listen, or help solve the issues we are facing in thinly populated areas.

AREA - Arts in Rural European Areas started as a working group within IETM. In October 2020, it became an independent network that continues to contribute to IETM.

AREA is a new network that supports arts in rural areas by creating exchanges of experiences, researching working methods, and collecting data and resources. It stimulates advocacy on a local, regional, national and European level. AREA includes all disciplines. Members are artists, creators, organisers, policymakers and scientists from all continents.

Dance as a modern art form emerged at the turn of the twentieth century, against the backdrop of consolidating industrial capitalism.

Just as the body and movement of masses were becoming subjected to the dictate of backbreaking machines, modern dance constituted itself around the choreographic exploration of body and movement, liberated from that machinic coercion. The history of modern dance can thus be read as a dialectical opposite of the transformation of commodified labour. Over the last hundred years, that opposition between the coercive and the liberated has crumbled and transformed by the growing flexibilisation and precarisation of labour relations.

The labouring body is increasingly enjoined to be free and enterprising, while the dancing body is increasingly demanded to show itself labouring to justify its privilege to free artistic exploration.

Our opening keynote will retrace the entwined historical trajectories of dance and labour and speculate on what dance portends for the understanding of the contemporary, algorithmically-commanded, on-demand forms of labour.

Meeting point: In front of MTS Dvorana (Kombank Dvorana)

Urban ecosystems are our most prominent ecosystems. However, we have become so accustomed to only noticing the human made world that our ability to observe nature in cities has severely diminished. At the same time, the health sustainability and climate resilience of our cities depends heavily on the presence and biodiversity of nature.
How can we connect intimately and work closely with a more-than-human world? How can we step out of the anthropocentric and into the new?

Discover daily actions and habits that can help us engage and transform our perception of nature in the cities.

This session will start with an analysis of the “project-based” cultural economy and the pressures and transformations it has brought to the field of artistic production. It will also explore different strategies, alliances and articulate the struggles for better working conditions, with a special focus on feminist, self-organised and political movements in the cultural field that have potential for change.

We will also discuss the position of freelancers and independent artists in a post covid context.

Towards feminist dramaturgical thinking [workshop]

Location: Maršalov Salon, MTS Dvorana (Kombank Dvorana)

Location: Maršalov Salon, MTS Dvorana (Kombank Dvorana)

In this workshop, Ana Dubljević invites us to view (feminist) dramaturgy - not only how it produces a meaning on stage, but also as the common practice of thinking and feeling within the process of creation, organisation, production and dissemination of a performance.

If in our relationship with the audience, we leave the authority of a central viewing point, can the feminist dramaturgical thinking help us to also leave it in the working process, both intentionally and simultaneously? How can we lead processes based on the practices of pleasure and care? How can we lead processes not with efficiency, but through co-existing in disagreement and with those that provide space for uncertainties despite the fear, because they see space as freedom? Can those different processes produce different shows, and if so how?

Participants are invited to reflect and share examples of their own artistic and cultural practices and map the problems and possibilities of this type of approach.

This session will be based texts from the book by Ana Dubljević - “The Feminist Pornscapes. On Feminist Dramaturgical Thinking in Dance and Performance Practice”

This workshop has a limited capacity of 20 participants. Registrations are first come, first served.

Body of work — Body diversity and the negative space of the performing act

Location: Maršalov Salon, MTS Dvorana (Kombank Dvorana)

Location: Maršalov Salon, MTS Dvorana (Kombank Dvorana)

This workshop will address the relationship between the disabled body, contemporary dance and negative space in the performing arts.

Is the disabled body usually seen as a negative space or figure of the performing act, and what is the artistic potential of its position?

How do our performance practices position the disabled body in order to become a figure? How can inclusive practices shift the perception of what creates the artistic form and the negative space in the performing arts?

Participants will create performance materials themselves through the exploration of their body and pushing the boundaries of their imagined, assumed or experienced ‘completeness’.

Living room — Ersan Mondtag [Local showcase]

Location: Belgrade Drama Theatre

Location: Belgrade Drama Theatre

Address: Milesevska St. No.64a, Belgrade | Event Map  | Venue Accessibility

Performance in Serbian with English subtitles.

An auteur project by Ersan Mondtag, one of the most promising young artists of the German and European theatre scenes. Living Room at the Belgrade Drama Theatre is a part of the eponymous project initiated in 2021 in the Belgian theatre NTGent.

The title is a word play which is untranslatable into Serbian – since it is a living room, i.e. sitting room or - literally translated from English - a room for living.

“My international career was launched several years ago, at the 51st Bitef festival, which makes my relationship with Belgrade quite unique and I’m glad to be back. Living Room, the second part of the trilogy The Living, is a story about life. We see an elderly woman who is getting ready for work in her living room. Once the stage rotates, we see a young woman in the same situation. That’s practically the same life over the course of 40 years.”

“Today a true artist is only the artist who can say, ‘for everything else, please address my manager’.

In such contrasting, antagonistic, and variable attempts to remove money, labour, and labour relations from the stage of art representation, there are obvious consensual efforts to explain that art cannot be understood as business as usual, as labour or work – but rather as something completely different. At this point, money appears as creative shame. [...]

However, [...] what will we find if we try to get closer to economic reality of ‘workers’ active in the ever expanding ‘world of art’ in all its domains of (self-)critical negations, transformations, excesses, inclusions, and exclusions only to focus on the very moment when projects and collaborations come to life? How does art-as-ideology inhabit speech used on such occasions?”

Vesić, J. (2016, September 29). »Administration of Aesthetics« or: On Underground Currents of Negotiating Artistic Jobs; Between Love and Money, Money and Love. Retrieved from schloss-post.com.

Join us for our Saturday keynote speech, where we will reflect on the discourse around love and money in the arts.

What are the practical ways to deal with burnout? What tools do we need to do so on a daily basis?

According to a 2021 survey, over two thirds of artists have experienced a burnout at least once in their career. This shows us that it is crucial to be able to understand its causes from an individual perspective, and to recognise the signs early on.

This session will tackle strategies and techniques for burnout prevention and recovery with a certified professional, a graduate in psychology at the University of Belgrade with a masters degree in Counselling Psychology from McGill University, Montreal, Canada.

Art is not alone

Location: Sala 6, MTS Dvorana (Kombank Dvorana)

Labour unions are losing ground in the arts. Less and less artists are becoming members of unions and are rather opting for  self-organising methods. Self organised methods come with their own challenges, and in some regions, being part of a union is not an option. How can we as artists and artistic workers reclaim our position and work on policies for improved labour conditions within our sector? This session will attempt to answer this question, as well as offer participants a comparison of union activities in different local contexts.

Following the performances at the Zagreb Youth Theatre and at the Slovenian National Theatre Drama in Ljubljana, director Sebastijan Horvat is ending the year with Heiner Müller’s Cement at the Belgrade Drama Theatre.

Cement is a piece about turmoil; from the revolutionary times that it treats, the struggle between the emancipatory aspirations of his characters and their anchoring in the traditional family relationships they grew up in, to the romantic relationship between the main characters, reflecting the impact of social circumstances on the most intimate level.

This third performance in Belgrade, inspired by the great East German playwright Cement, will be based on an original play by Milan Ramšak Marković, in which the place and time of the story moves to Belgrade in the present day.

The relationship between trauma, memory and political dementia that we gradually get lost in and the conflict that is encoded in our bodies are just some of the motifs introduced by this last act of a conversation with Heiner Müller.

Right you are, if you think so [Local showcase]

Location: Yugoslav Drama Theatre

Performance in Serbian with English subtitles

Who is the mysterious Lady Frola who moved into our neighbourhood? And why doesn’t she live with the son-in-law who visits all the time, or with her daughter who never goes out and no one has ever seen! What secret are they hiding, and what misfortune drove them here from the town where they lived before?
These are the questions that trouble the characters of this play by Pirandello. Having nothing – except emptiness – behind the respectable and important social masks that they wear, they become obsessive and tireless in digging around and analysing other people’s lives, in the firm belief that they can get to the truth.
‘Right you are, if you think so’ is a humorous, cynical and wise play by the Nobel Prize laureate and famous Italian playwright Luigi Pirandello, one of the most important reformers of drama theatre in the 20th century. It contains motifs and ideas that resonate with the times we live in, where truth equals information, and compassion for those closest to us wanes and disappears before the desire for sensation.

A Lullaby For Aleksija Rajčić [Local showcase]

Location: National Theatre in Belgrade

Location: National Theatre in Belgrade

Address: Francuska 3, Beograd | Event Map  | Venue Accessibility

Performance in Serbian with English subtitles

Aleksija Rajčić, the main heroine of Đorđe Kosić's play, has not had many choices in her life. Like all the other women, she is surrounded by those whose lives represent the model through which hers is expected to function. In a world steeped by the patriarchy, the only thing expected from Aleksija is to keep silent and endure hardships. The only alternative to a life that was predestined for violence and deprived of any choice, happiness or possibility of emancipation, even before it began, is death.

Through a specific stylistic intervention in which he combines all the supporting characters in a male and female choir, the author of the play singles out Aleksija and her experience, putting them in focus alongside the depersonalised characters of this story, i.e. society, which is the biggest obstacle in this woman’s search for freedom and happiness.

In addition to the formal shaping of the text, the playwright also plays with the language, skillfully depicting the traumatic life story of a woman who, paradoxically, finds a way out of the vicious circle of violence and ultimate freedom in prison.

Miss Julie [Local showcase]

Performance in Serbian and Slovenian with English subtitles

Haris Pasovic, a world-renowned director, whose glittering achievements have been staged in Belgrade theatres, presents August Strindberg’s play Miss Julie at the Madleninum.

Set in contemporary Slovenia, Julie is the daughter of a Slovenian mogul who is no more an aristocrat, but her ancestors were. At the same time, Jean, her servant who comes from Serbia, is a Gastarbeiter (guest worker) who earns a living at her father’s estate. The play explores the class and gender dynamics between the two.

Just like in the play, the story happens during the nightly celebration where alcohol, sleeplessness and a party atmosphere lead to acts of passion between the main two characters, ultimately to their regrets. This concept gives Pasovic a possibility to spotlight the economic inequality that exists between the EU and non-EU citizens.

Sara Dirnbek, who plays Julie, and Mina Pavlica, who plays Jean, bring Miss Julie to life on stage, alongside a sterling ensemble cast, as a contemporary up to date love story.

“Tens of thousands of young Balkans go to the EU for economic reasons and do the hardest physical work there. They are becoming a new social class, the lowest in the European social hierarchy.”
