SHIFT Online Session on Gender & Power Relations

16:00-17:30 CET - 15:00-16:30 GMT - 10:00-11:30 EST/EDT - 01:00-02:30 AEDT

No matter how atrocious and particular #MeToo cases are, they are never only related to an individual perpetrator. Sexual harassment and sexual abuse are a form of structural violence and are thus deeply entangled with the dominant gender, racial, economic and power structures.

Held as part of the SHIFT – Shared Initiatives for Training project, this online session has presented the first results of our latest research on sexual harassment, bullying and power abuse in the European art field. Our research is a contribution towards moving the dialogue away from singular cases towards structures, with the goal of inspiring cultural networks, art institutions and organisations to self-critically reflect on their own position towards sexual and power abuse and to re-define their work models, codes and structures.

This online session has been followed by a participatory discussion at our IETM Lyon Plenary Meeting 2021 on 22 October where the final SHIFT Gender and Power Relations research will be launched, and we will focus on the steps the culture sector can take together to combat sexual harassment and power abuse.

Participants have been invited to read our SHIFT key findings as a preparation for the session.

About SHIFT

The SHIFT – Shared Initiatives for Training project aims to provide training and skills for cultural leaders, specifically those of cultural networks. Cultural leaders shall be enabled to implement changes where needed and to pass on their knowledge gained through the project to leaders and staff members of their network, as well as to the broader cultural sector.

Being a part of the SHIFT project alongside eight other European cultural networks, we are leading the project strand on Gender & Power Relations and contribute to the packages on Climate Changes and Inclusion. The project is coordinated by the European Music Council. Learn more about SHIFT.

About IETM Lyon 2021

Co-organised by a diverse team of IETM members, artists, cultural professionals and students, IETM Plenary Meeting 2021 was held in Lyon, France, and online on 21-24 October 2021. Under the umbrella notion of Trans-missions, the Open Forum format has provided a free space to invent, together, processes and methods which can serve our performing arts ecosystem. Most of all, the Meeting has been an opportunity to get together and to celebrate the 40th anniversary of IETM, which held its first formal meeting in France in 1981.

The IETM Lyon Plenary Meeting 2021 has included a follow-up participatory discussion on 22 October 2021 where the final SHIFT Gender and Power Relations research was launched. Learn more about IETM Lyon 2021.
