The Performing Arts in (North of) England
This mapping, commissioned specially for IETM Hull, offers an in-depth overview of the performing arts scene in the North of England, where possible focusing on inclusive practices.

Readings for the session Cultural democracy in practice

Mind the gap: audience, governance and policies
Why should we do participatory work? Is it possible for cultural institutions to manage cultural democracy? What are the power structures underlying participatory practices? To what extent is the participatory agenda aligned with the neoliberal agenda? These questions were at the heart of this IETM Munich session.

Readings for the session Producers in the middle

International producing organisations: soon the end of the competition (?)
This IETM Munich report summarises the findings from the three roundtables held during the session on hierarchical models within producing organisations, the relationship between the artist and the producer, and stories of success and failure regarding international cooperation

Readings for the session Art in rural areas

Fields of Vision. Other voices, rural places, global stories
This Satellite Wales report summarises the discussions held during the meeting on the plurality of the concepts of rural, identity, territory, and culture, and brings concrete case studies on inspiring arts projects taking place in rural areas.

Artistic creation outside the urban areas
This session at IETM Porto featured some examples of artistic creation and community arts in the rural areas and looked into such aspects, as: local authorities’ understanding of the importance and support for arts in rural area is crucial to achieve sustainable results; it is counterproductive to underestimate your audience.

Producing in the margins
How is performing art inspired, produced and experienced in the peripheries of mainland Europe? What challenges and opportunities does geographical remoteness bring? This IETM Porto session showcased some examples from Portugal, Slovenia, Norway and Lithuania.

Meanwhile in the Countryside
IETM Brussels session "Meanwhile in the Countryside" shed some light on experiences, practices and methods of undertaking art projects in rural areas. The session has also challenged the notion of bringing culture to the countryside, claiming that there is already a culture, and a deeply rooted one.

Readings for the session The planet of us

FRESH PERSPECTIVES 4: Art for the Planet's Sake. Arts and Environment
Tapping into a different instinct and rationale than political rhetoric, corporate sales-patter and scientific data, art prepares us for this change -  not in calculations but in humanity. IETM's new Fresh Perspectives, produced in collaboration with COAL, explores how.

Readings for the session From Palestine with love

Performing against extinction: report from the IETM Caravan Palestine
Our last year journey to Palestine was an enriching visit to a range of venues and cultural centres in Ramallah and Bethlehem and an eye-opening snapshot of the burning topics for the local sector and society. Nan van Houte has shared her insights complemented by some history of the Palestinian performing arts.

Readings for the session New Civic Spaces

Art and Civic Movements

This IETM Brussels session has explored the tensions between the artist as both a romantic outsider and an activist insider. Each panelist had an experience in engaging with civic movements: some from recent years, others – for decades, some on a local level, others on an international one.

COMM UNITY SPACE

Based on the experience and research carried out by members of Művelődési Szint (Müszi), a community space in Budapest, this handbook serves as a valuable guide for those who are thinking of opening an independent community space.

General readings

Let's act now: on what we say when you're not there
The IETM Bucharest session was intended as a safe space to have an open conversation about diversity, acknowledging that majority views often dominate, and that it may be productive to work together towards accepting difference.

IETM Porto keynote speech: “A Critical Ten Point Plan to Creating Professional Sectors that Reflect Society” by Tunde Adefioye

City of arrival
In this IETM Brussels session, the new nature of our European cities was discussed: how from ‘multicultural’ to ‘superdiverse’ – with a majority of the population having roots in migration - our cities have changed and how this change should be reflected in all aspects of societies.

FRESH PERSPECTIVES 7: Permission to Stare. Arts and Disability
This Fresh Perspectives issue explores the different approaches to disability in the performing arts, with a particular focus on contemporary dance.

Let’s act now: on gender as a political issue
This session at IETM Bucharest was designed to discuss gender equality and sexual identities and to define some concrete steps that IETM members and the network as a whole can take.

Other abilities, evolving aesthetics?
This working session at IETM Valencia was about setting out a vision for diversity in the arts – focusing on opportunities and aesthetics specifically related to different abilities being represented in the arts.

Whose story is this, anyway?
The objective of this session at IETM Valencia was to discuss the role of diversity, equity and inclusion in the performing arts today. Rather than providing final answers, the session aimed at exploring the key questions and identifying central themes.

Creation and Displacement: Developing new narratives around migration
This mapping aims to showcase some of the incredible artistic projects taking place in Europe and internationally with a focus on support, solidarity and engagement with refugees, asylum-seekers and those who are recently displaced.

Fortress Europe
The purpose of the session was to pool together the reflections, experiences, recommendations and actions of the participants, working in the field of culture and the arts, thus trying to find some temporary working solutions to the urgent issue of refuge and migration.

Towards an inclusive culture
This debate, which took place in IETM Amsterdam, was about the urgency to open up the arts to all of society - to all the classes, ethnicities, religions, physical abilities, and backgrounds that constitute it.

Audience Explorations: Guidebook for hopefully seeking the audience
This publication invites you to explore the complex and fascinating subject that is the audience, to question and complicate your understanding of them, and to rethink 'audience development' in terms of connection with fellow citizens, genuine exchange and 'togetherness'.
