Autumn training programme

In October and November 2023, the IETM Green School offered a two-month-long training programme for IETM members only, who received a small stipend to compensate for their time. The programme offered a series of workshops, peer working sessions and coachings. The training took place online in two strands:

The world is living through an unfolding climate catastrophe. This was not inevitable, and neither are we at a point of runaway climate warming. This talk will explore the crisis of mainstream climate politics and the importance of responding to climate justice in order to accelerate the deep, just transition. It will provide a conceptual, historical and emancipatory ecological perspective of climate justice, with reference to the world’s first Climate Justice Charter developed in South Africa.

  • Workshop facilitated by Sarah O’Hare from Creative Carbon Scotland

Creative Carbon Scotland draws on our extensive experience at the intersection of arts and sustainability to bring the workshop ‘Climate justice as the foundation for organisational environmental policies’. The workshop will take climate justice as the foundation for creating environmental policy in performing arts, leading participants through interactive exercises to help them establish scope and content for their environmental policy through the lens of climate justice. Participants will work together but focus on outcomes related to their individual needs.

Would you like to involve your organisation in the ecological transition but don't know how or where to start?

This session will introduce the STAGES Doughnut Protocol, designed to guide structures and Individuals working in the performing arts in the elaboration of a concrete green action plan to implement, with both an environmental and social focus.

The Doughnut Protocol has been developed as part of the STAGES - Sustainable Theatre Alliance for a Green Environmental Shift project. It was created in partnership between Theatre de Vidy, Lausanne/Switzerland and the Competence Center in Sustainability of the UNIL as a way to identify and guide deep sustainable change in theatre and related institutions.

This protocol - based on the 'Doughnut Economics' - is a pioneering and playful approach to sustainability that offers a participatory method adapted to local contexts.

It will guide you towards the sustainable changes that would be most effective in your organisations, through a self-analysis based on several categories including staff wellbeing, resource and waste use, funding and sponsorships and enhancing cultural participation.

This session will explore the fundamental principles of sustainable cultural management, using the participants’ feedback as a starting point and aiming to help further develop their projects, based on the best international practices.

The session will also focus on the challenges of mainstreaming sustainable thinking and practice at scale in the cultural sector, taking into account the different national or regional contexts of the participating practitioners. It will also suggest possible pathways for collective action, through examples of extraordinary cultural leadership in the fight against the climate and environmental crisis.

Spring training sessions

From April 20, the IETM Green School offered three online, hands-on training sessions for IETM members only. Each session delved into specific topics related to the green transition, offering knowledge shared by experienced facilitators and guest speakers, concrete examples and hands-on exercises.
