Rethinking Festivals
Festivals: a perennial topic of interest in IETM! Join the debate this time. In order to identify the next generation of festivals, we need to reflect on their political and social engagement, and contrast these with artistic rationales. Is a festival the right platform for long lasting collaborations? Is there any right way of programming? What does 'sustainability' mean when speaking of festivals? Which kind of visions will be needed to inspire artists, audiences and policy makers alike?
Given that the newly proposed EU cultural programme "Creative Europe" will put a central focus on audience-building as an absolute priority, how will festivals prove their audiences are growing, in order to receive EU subsidies?
The debate will be illustrated with stories from different types of festival organisations.
