FAT Festival 2026
OPEN CALL FOR PERFORMANCES
SPAM Studios invites artists and theatre companies from both Bulgaria and abroad to apply for the seventh edition of the Festival of Authorial Theatre (FAT), taking place from 27–29 November 2026 in Sofia, Bulgaria.
For us, authorial theatre is not defined by genre or method. We understand it as a theatrical practice that begins with artistic necessity: the need to formulate a question, articulate a position, share an experience, or critically engage with the realities of the present.
This necessity precedes form, becoming the starting point for theatrical expression and the search for a distinctive authorial language and presence.
The seventh edition of FAT is dedicated to monodrama and unfolds under the theme RESISTANCE. The theme explores resistance as an artistic gesture and the capacity of theatre to engage in a critical dialogue with contemporary reality.
We are looking for solo performances that offer original artistic responses to this theme, engaging with personal, social, or political realities through distinct authorial perspectives. We welcome works developed through a range of author-driven practices, including:
- devised and process-based works
- documentary and autobiographical works
- dance, physical and movement-based performances
- text-based and contemporary authorial works
- performance and lecture-performance
- multimedia and hybrid formats
- experimental and interdisciplinary works
Selected productions will receive:
- accommodation for up to three team members (two nights with breakfast)
- lunch during the festival
- technical support and production facilities at Toplocentrala – Regional Centre for Contemporary Arts
- participation in moderated post-show discussions with theatre scholars, audiences, and the international jury
- networking opportunities with artists, curators, selectors, professionals, and guests
- evaluation by the international jury
Please note: Travel costs to and from Sofia are the responsibility of the participating artists and companies.
Awards:
- FAT Award (monetary prize)
- 2 International Selection Awards – invitations to partner festivals
We look forward to receiving bold and urgent solo works that respond to the present through distinct artistic voices.
