DanceMap: Mapping and Safeguarding European Dance Heritage

Are you a keeper or practitioner of dance heritage? We want to hear from you and your networks.

Europe’s dance heritage is a vibrant testament to creativity, identity, and cultural memory. Yet, much of it remains dispersed across small archives, personal collections, and informal networks, with many practices at risk of being lost. DanceMap, a three-year research and artistic project funded by Horizon Europe, seeks to document, preserve, and promote 20th- and 21st-century European dance. By connecting researchers, artists, cultural organisations, archives, and policy experts, DanceMap explores new ways of sharing embodied knowledge and ensuring that dance heritage is both visible and actively engaged with.

Who We Want to Hear From

We welcome contributions from anyone working with dance heritage, formally or informally, including:

  • Individual artists, practitioners, and researchers
  • Those working with transmission, reply, reenactment, reconstruction, or other embodied practices
  • People and organisations taking innovative or unconventional approaches to heritage
  • Communities and regions that are underrepresented in mainstream archival spaces
  • Archives, libraries, and collections

Because European dance heritage is shaped by transnational movement and global cultural exchange, we are keen to hear from voices across Europe and in contexts connected worldwide. Your insights help ensure that cultural memory, identity, and creativity are recognised, celebrated, and sustained.

About the Survey

Designed by the Centre for Dance Research (C-DaRE) at Coventry University, the survey maps the materials, practices, and stories connected to 20th- and 21st-century dance. We are particularly interested in:

  • Unarchived or endangered collections
  • Embodied practices at risk of being lost
  • Heritage work emerging from underrepresented communities or contexts

Your input contributes to understanding what exists, what is at risk, and where support or recognition is needed, strengthening Europe’s collective cultural heritage.

Why Your Contribution Matters

By sharing your knowledge, you contribute to a more equitable, diverse, and resilient understanding of European dance, ensuring the voices of underrepresented artists, communities, and practices are preserved for future generations.

Get Involved
