Beyond Signs Project on stage
Beyond Signs is a 2 years project (2020-2022) intending to improve the social integration of deaf people through artistic cooperation, by involving them actively in the performing sector, from the creation to the staging, circulating in the EU countries involved and meeting different mixed audiences. Through the activities implemented in the project, the skills of native signer artists, cultural operators and sign language interpreters are enhanced, while the audience is sensitized about the potentiality of theatre played by deaf artists.
The Artistic Direction of the project is lead by a team of deaf/native signer artists: Rita Mazza and Diana Anselmo (IT), Angel Naumovski (HR), Tony Weaver (PT)
A call for deaf/native signer artists has been released in early 2021 and 6 deaf artists have been selected to be part of the production of a new theatre opera. Three final performances have been created and had their premiere in Lisbon in July 2022. In September 2022 one of those performances, titled "You have to be Deaf to understand" will be shown again in Italy: on September 18 in Piateda (SO) during Rami d'ORA festival; on September 25 in Milan during Vapore d'estate Festival. Nikita Lymar and Daniel Bongioanni are the two interpreters, Diana Anselmo is the Director.
Beyond Signs is conceived by Association Fattoria Vittadini (IT), with 2 partner organizations, Dlan (HR) and Voarte (PT). The project is co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union.
