Your urgent action is needed
Dear IETM member,
It’s a crucial time to defend culture within the EU’s policies, and your urgent action is needed.
The European Commission has proposed the EU’s budget for 2021-2027. Creative Europe will continue existing as a separate funding programme, despite the reduction of the total number of EU finding programmes by more than a third. The total budget of the programme is suggested to be increased from € 1.4 billion to € 1.85 billion, out of which € 650 million is allocated for the Culture strand, and € 1.2 billion for MEDIA. Learn more about the Commission’s proposal.
However, it will depend on the Members States and the European Parliament whether this proposal will go through as it is, or will be amended and in which direction. Given the Brexit’s negative impact on the EU’s budget, it is not guaranteed the programme for culture will have an increased budget.
We are encouraging you to contact your national governments, members of the European Parliament from your country and your Permanent Representative in Brussels to urge them, during the negotiations ahead, to ensure a substantial increase of culture’s budget within the next EU’s financial framework.
We have drafted a concise reaction to the Commission’s proposal, which you are welcome to translate in your language and use in your advocacy actions. We are also sharing with you a more elaborate statement on why culture deserves a strong EU funding programme. You can find the list of MEP’s here and the Permanent Representatives’ register here.
Do you have any questions regarding the process? Would you like to share with us your views about the situation? Please get in touch with us at any moment. Also, feel free to let us know what you are planning to do at your national level to advocate a strong budget for culture.
We will remain active at the EU level during the negotiation process and will inform you about our actions.
Kind regards,
Nan van Houte
