Pre-meeting trip to Charleroi

Excursion de pré-réunion à Charleroi

For the last few years, several increasingly collaborative projects have started to bloom on Charleroi’s dark terrain. Charleroi danse - our co-organiser in Brussels - invites you on a walk to discover street art and brand new cultural institutions. Charleroi danse, le BPS22, le Vecteur, le Quai10 and la Manufacture Urbaine are as much witnesses as they are actors to the rebirth of Wallonia’s most populated city. Climb a slag heap, a relic of past mining activity, and marvel at this post-industrial landscape.

Reserve your place

Registration deadline: 20 November
Price:
50€ (including lunch and shuttle bus)

No need to worry about the weather: in case of rain we will offer you an indoor programme that will keep your feet dry.

Make sure to put on your walking shoes!

Programme

08:00 Meeting at Brussels South Station outside the Eurostar terminal. Ludovica Riccardi from Charleroi danse will wait for you there with a sign reading ‘IETM’.
08:30 Departure from Brussels South Station by bus.
09:45 Welcoming coffee and breakfast at Les Écuries/Charleroi danse.
10:15

Visit of Les Écuries/Charleroi danse and presentation of the artist-in-residence Fanny Brouyaux.

Charleroi danse, the Centre chorégraphique de la Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, supports artists living in French-speaking Belgium through artistic residencies, the use of studios, and logistical or financial support to facilitate their creative process, research, production and circulation. The activities of Charleroi danse are organized at Les Écuries, the former stables of the gendarmerie (Charleroi) and at La Raffinerie, the former Gräffe sugar refinery (Brussels).

The young Belgian dancer and choreographer Fanny Broyaux will present her upcoming project De la poésie, du sport, etc. In this piece, Broyaux explores the complex and controversial notion of femininity in a series of choreographic poems, in collaboration with actress Sophie Guisset and slam poet Leïla Duquaine.

11:15

Presentation of the new urban and cultural development of Charleroi by Pauline Cabrit, collaborator of Georgios Maïllis, Bouwmeester of Charleroi.

The Bouwmeester office is an engine for exploration, impulse, collaboration, consultation and above all the realisation of structural projects for the city of Charleroi. It advises the Municipal Executive and the City Council of Charleroi to pursue coherent urban, landscape, and architectural development.

12:30

Presentation of La Manufacture Urbaine and lunch.

La Manufacture Urbaine is a platform dedicated to the production and valorisation of high-quality food, and accompanying food culture. It produces staple foods (beer, bread, coffee) with insight and know-how. Its mission is to initiate and stimulate these “crafts”, but also to transmit the taste and knowledge of high-quality creations.

14:15

Presentation of Quai 10 by Matthieu Bakolas, Director of Quai 10, and visit of the future business centre and harbour.

Quai10 is a space that brings together two essential disciplines from the world of contemporary images, cinema, and video gaming. It provides a forum for the exchange of ideas inspired by images. More than a cinema or a space for video gaming, it offers a creative and pedagogical approach that appeals to the general public as well as to various players in the fields of culture and education.

15:30

Climbing of the terril des Piges.

This artificial hill is a result of the city’s coal industry. Blending the darkness of coal with the beauty of the green landscape, it marks the border between the city and its industrial zone. The climb through this rich and dense biodiversity (there are even wild orchids!) leads to a stunning panoramic view.

17:15

Presentation of BPS22 by Pierre-Olivier Rollin, Director of BPS22.

BPS22 - Musée d’art de la Province de Hainaut (The Museum of Fine Arts of the Province of Hainaut) is one of the biggest museums in French-speaking Belgium. Its hybrid location, in the heart of Charleroi, consists of a raw industrial building and a white cube that is perfectly adapted to museum standards. BPS22 organizes a varied programme of exhibitions and mediation activities focused on cultural and social phenomena.

18:30

Welcome drink and presentation of Le Vecteur by Romain Voisin, Coordinator of Le Vecteur.

Le Vecteur is a cultural platform uniting various organisations active in literature, cinema, music and contemporary art. In its public programme, Le Vecteur explores what arises from the margins, the unexpected and the unconventional part of Culture (with a capital C) in an ambition to make it accessible to all.

19:30 Departure from Charleroi by bus.

12:30

CANCELLED: Pre-meeting trip to Mechelen

ANNULÉE: Excursion de pré-réunion à Malines

The pre-meeting trip to Mechelen has been cancelled.

Situated between Antwerp and Brussels, Mechelen is a trendy hub of historical patrimony with a vibrant arts scene. We invite you to discover this eminent city, home to the internationally acclaimed theatre company Abattoir Fermé, the established city theatre ARSENAAL/LAZARUS and the image foundry DE MAAN. The visual arts are equally well represented during the biennial of moving image Contour, organised by the arts centre NONA, and in the exhibition space De Garage of the local cultural centre. Take a cultural bath in a city where contemporary art manifestations clash with a historical context.

Programme

08:50 Meeting at Brussels Central Station, in the main hall in front of the ticket windows. Willy Thomas from ARSENAAL/LAZARUS will wait for you there with a sign reading ‘IETM’.
09:01 Departure from Brussels Central station.
09:26 Arrival in Mechelen Central Station.
09:30 Welcoming coffee at ARSENAAL/LAZARUS.
10:00

Presentation of the city theatre ARSENAAL/LAZARUS and the theatre company LAZARUS

The city theatre ARSENAAL/LAZARUS has a history of 60 years. LAZARUS is a collective of 5 actors and 1 actress and their productions are often based on Russian novelists. Last year, LAZARUS became the in-house theatre company of ARSENAAL and part of the artistic team with Willy Thomas as artistic director. Thomas will present The Ground of Things and The Life of Mechelen, two of the long-term city projects, ARSENAAL/LAZARUS is developing.

11:00

Historical walk

We will take a moment to stroll through the historical city centre passing by the famous Rombouts Tower.

11:40

Visit of the memorial and museum Kazerne Dossin.

The Kazerne Dossin is a memorial, museum and documentation centre about the holocaust. Drawing the persecution of Jews and Gypsies during the Second World War in Belgium, it denounces the mechanisms that cause violations of human rights.

13:00 Lunch at the arts center NONA/Contour.
14:00

Presentation of the arts centre NONA/Contour and the theatre company Abattoir Fermé. Performance Ghost of Abattoir Fermé (100 min).

Since 2001, the arts centre NONA produces and presents contemporary performing arts, jazz and Contour, a biennial of moving image. NONA’s partners in crime are the internationally acclaimed theatre company Abattoir Fermé and the dance and performance group Voetvolk, founded by dancer/choreographer Lisbeth Gruwez and composer/musician Maarten Van Cauwenberghe.

Inspired by travellings to Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi (USA), the performance Ghost is an immersive and exquisitely designed nightmare which pulls you straight into the swamps 'down south'. Showcasing Abattoir Fermé’s intriguing theatrical universe, with no spoken text but all the more magical images, Ghost delves into dark corners of the human soul while remaining comical and sinister at the same time.

16:15

Presentation of the image foundry DE MAAN and performance If Walls Could Talk (12 min) of Christiaan Mariman.

Former puppet theatre DE MAAN became a successful production house working in the field of multidisciplinary and visual theatre for children, youngsters and adults. The two venues that make up the image foundry DE MAAN are beautifully located in a historical building where a place is given to young talent.

Initially developed for the opening festival of the new build theatre of DE MAAN, If Walls Could Talk is a performance by the young artist Christiaan Mariman that received praise since its premiere. In this non-verbal performance, we see a lonely man trapped in his daily routines.

17:00

Visit of the contemporary art exhibitions at De Garage and the cultural centre of Mechelen.

In the exhibition Replace me as the Substitute, on view in contemporary art space De Garage, Italian performance - and visual artist Michael Fliri continues his explorations in the concepts of metamorphosis and disguise. In his work, Fliri tries to capture a protagonist -often Fliri himself- going through a transition from one world to another.

The Belgian photographer Tim Dirven presents a selection of his oeuvre in the exhibition Karkas in the cultural centre of Mechelen. The engaged press photographer Dirven shows a social class in which survival is the main concern.

18:00

Goodbye drink at bar KUUB.

Catch up with the other participants of this amazing journey while enjoying the taste of a local beer.

20:04 Departure from Mechelen Central Station.
20:27 Arrival in Brussels Central Station.

Thomas vous présentera The Ground of Things et The Life of Mechelen, deux des projets à long terme développés par ARSENAAL/LAZARUS.

11:00

Promenade historique.

16:15

16:15

Beursschouwburg

Spectacle #4 - Sara Manente & Christophe Albertijn (toutes les heures à l'heure pile)

Beursschouwburg

Spectacle #4 is a film of four chapters that considers the relationship between dance and language. Starting from a series of interviews, the film displays how we talk, understand and remember a performance (or not). Translation, particularly from one medium to another, is an ambiguous activity: by literally putting words on dance, and vice versa, the artists try to convey the complexity of this topic in a rather excessive and sensual way.

Each screening starts every hour on the hour, with the last screening starting at 22:00.

Price: free entrance

Genre: Film
Language: English/French/Italian/Spanish
Subtitles: English

Deeply touched by the first French experiment in cinema vérité, Justine Lequette and the actors direct the key questions of Chronique d’un été (1960), a documentary film by Edgar Morin and Jean Rouch, to passers-by, students, workers, and immigrants of today’s society. By asking questions of happiness, life, work, and utopias, the performance puts these two periods into perspective whilst also drawing on documentary sequences by Pierre Carles, extracts from plays by Alexandra Badea and improvisations by the actors. The focus on the meaning of our existence creates an aesthetic that, despite being inspired by real life situations, maintains a playful dimension.

Should I stay or should I stay - Simon Thomas

La Balsamine

An empty space. A door. And four crazy-looking weirdo’s in gaudy costumes. Location unknown. Unknown period. Names multiplied to infinity. All we know is that they are stuck in a room. It would be enough if they could just open the door ... They speak of the lobster’s immortality, three-tail cats, exile on Mars. These somewhat existential questions haunt and echo our anxieties of confronting time, death and the feeling of helplessness.

Hands-On Hamlet - CREW

LaVallée

Hands-On Hamlet is CREW's long-term pursuit wherein art takes the lead in pushing the experiential potential of immersive media. The project addresses the key questions raised in Hamlet: how to be a moral subject and how one is determined by cultural mind-sets. The initial results of this research are prototypes from CREW’s Live-virtual reality-production. These show the progress the company has made in avoiding anything reminiscent of a game and in making the visual medium more spacious and less cinematic.

Fully booked.
Max 6 participants. Each immersive experience lasts 20 minutes.

Spectacle #4 - Sara Manente & Christophe Albertijn (every hour on the hour)

Opening keynote speech: Art in the age of populism

Kaaitheater

Discours d’ouverture : L'art à l'époque du populisme

Kaaitheater

“Populism” has become a container concept which needs clarification. But regardless of the shapes it takes, it comes down to a way of doing politics, pretending to express directly the voice of the people without mediation. Thus it is a symptom of the crisis of representative democracy, of the void between politics and the citizen. If we don’t want to give up on democracy by choosing for an authoritarian system, we have to search for new forms of democracy. That search, intertwined as it is with the question of representation, challenges the producers of art, culture and knowledge. What are the shortcomings of existing forms of representation? How can art and science contribute to participatory democracy? What are the mental maps for a world in transition?

In ISOS, Kris Verdonck makes reference to the world and characters depicted in James Graham Ballard’s (GB, 1930-2009) apocalyptic science-fiction novels. In his magic realistic stories and autobiographical works, Ballard portrays intelligent and visionary descriptions of a future world that increasingly resembles our contemporary neoliberal society. ISOS consists of 3D videos shown in nine view-boxes where virtual sculptures perform in the strained socio-political situation that is called suburbia. The audio-visual installation acts as a short film edited in the viewer's imagination.

Price: free entrance

Genre: Video Installation

Should I stay or should I stay - Simon Thomas

La Balsamine

An empty space. A door. And four crazy-looking weirdo’s in gaudy costumes. Location unknown. Unknown period. Names multiplied to infinity. All we know is that they are stuck in a room. It would be enough if they could just open the door ... They speak of the lobster’s immortality, three-tail cats, exile on Mars. These somewhat existential questions haunt and echo our anxieties of confronting time, death and the feeling of helplessness.

Should I stay or should I stay - Simon Thomas

La Balsamine

Should I stay or should I stay - Simon Thomas

La Balsamine

An empty space. A door. And four crazy-looking weirdo’s in gaudy costumes. Location unknown. Unknown period. Names multiplied to infinity. All we know is that they are stuck in a room. It would be enough if they could just open the door ... They speak of the lobster’s immortality, three-tail cats, exile on Mars. These somewhat existential questions haunt and echo our anxieties of confronting time, death and the feeling of helplessness.

Kaaistudio’s

55 is the first piece Moroccan choreographer and dancer Radouan Mriziga created. Since its premiere in 2014, Mriziga has been touring with this solo all over the world. In 55, Radouan Mriziga constantly plays with the perspective and expectations of the spectator. He sets himself several basic tasks. By carrying them out, he creates ‘forms’, but he also puts himself in an increasingly complex situation.

Day opening plenary: Pluralist Populist Poetics

In this session, Eleanor Bauer will talk about "the traumas and ruptures of the post-truth era that are exposing holes in the fabric of our co-constructed realities." Now we must exercise pluralism in thought, understanding and action. How can we create space for artistic, social and discursive practices that listen to the murmurings of the multitude and employ sensitivity towards today's complexities and chaos? Let’s unfold art in the age of populism in relation to the obsolete divide between rationality and emotionality in public discourse, among other divisive strategies.

‘Glocal’ is a buzzword. But what lies behind this blanket term? In his book Jihad vs McWorld (1995), the American political scientist Benjamin Barber describes the battle between global, deregulated market powers and the revival of traditional values found in the form of religious orthodoxy or extreme nationalism. Today, populist politicians propagate protectionism, anti-globalist policies and identity politics worldwide. In the arts, disconnected internationalism is increasingly replaced by relocalisation policies. Is it enough to counter populist identity claims? Or is a deeper and more fundamental rewriting of our international arts practice necessary?

When we say ‘access’ what do we mean, how can we provide it, and whose responsibility is it? In this session we will explore what is referred to as the ‘Social Model’ of disability - how we should all take responsibility for breaking down the barriers that prevent access to what we provide. We will look at a range of situations, illustrate different methods for providing access and discover how to create space and time for finding solutions to accessibility issues. From beginners to experts, this session is designed for all levels.

Genre: Film

Hands-On Hamlet - CREW

Brass’Art

Hands-On Hamlet is CREW's long-term pursuit wherein art takes the lead in pushing the experiential potential of immersive media. The project addresses the key questions raised in Hamlet: how to be a moral subject and how one is determined by cultural mind-sets. The initial results of this research are prototypes from CREW’s Live-virtual reality-production. These show the progress the company has made in avoiding anything reminiscent of a game and in making the visual medium more spacious and less cinematic.

Fully booked.
Max 6 participants. Each immersive experience lasts 20 minutes.

Genre: Virtual reality

BIENVEN.U.E !

La Raffinerie/Charleroi danse - Machine room

Jean-Claude Juncker, president of the European Commission, once said that artists are the ‘crown jewels’ of the European project, but the European project itself lost part of its shining aureole to Eurosceptic and criticism on its functioning. As it stands, culture isn’t an active domain: neither the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, nor Juncker’s White Paper on the Future of Europe mention the role of culture. What can we, as hyper-mobile, agile and bridge-building art professionals do to help Europe build brighter futures? And what is Europe willing to offer the arts? In this session we will shine light on the roles we want to take and which are the ones most valued by those who decide on the future of Europe.

City of Arrival

Ville d'arrivée

La Raffinerie/Charleroi danse - Studio

Molenbeek is, traditionally, known as a ‘city of arrival’. Now, the whole of Brussels can be considered as such. Each of the 19 cities constituting the capital of Belgium absorbs their migrants: expats, refugees and artists from all corners of the world. Meanwhile, populist sentiments serve to highlight tension between localised realities and the nation state. Can (or should) the arts be involved in urban integration policies? Can municipalities and artists support each other in creating open and cosmopolitan citizenships? Starting from a series of case studies, we will explore arts’ practices addressing the topics of newcomers, migration and forced mobility.

The performers share their own notions of surveillance through movement. Entering and exiting real frames, they explore limits by trespassing, displacing, and overcoming them. Framed is an all-terrain play. The invention of an outside area of freedom allows them a moment of reflection whilst vocal virtuosity and body percussion contrast with the simplicity of empty frames.

Mockumentary of a Contemporary Saviour - Wim Vandekeybus/Ultima Vez

We are in the distant future. A turning point in the history of mankind has been reached. A devastating force is engaged in utterly destroying all life on earth. A few people have, nonetheless, succeeded in reaching a place of safety. In Mockumentary of a Contemporary Saviour, Wim Vandekeybus, through the medium of seven characters, presents an incisive portrait of a messiah as an imaginary figure. Utopia and dystopia at a single glance. Nothing is what it seems in this futuristic reality.

Brussels-based choreographer Louise Vanneste loves to produce a combination of grace and instinctive casualness in her works. Proof of this can be found again in Thérians, a word that comes from therianthropy that, for the uninitiated, is the mythological ability of human beings to metamorphose into animals. From the parading and marriage rituals of birds, she retains the body’s ability to metamorphose, to adopt a different sex, acknowledged by Virginia Woolf as providing inspiration for her Orlando. Keen on the dark black of photography, with her usual associates and the young Youness Khoukhou she intends to reinvent an awakening of a mysterious nature for the stage.
