At the core of this conversation will be the new focus on audience development, and we invite IETM members to share their examples of existing and potential practices in this area, in relation to Creative Europe's plans. Dublin’s Fare City is a series of taxi tours in which one of three cab drivers will take you and your fellow passengers on an intimate excursion through Dublin. Along the way, they will share the personal, the political and the social of the built environment beyond the car windows. Climb in for an alternative experience of the city and its architecture. Michelle Browne, visual artist and curator (Ireland) michellebrowne.net Language: English Dublin Fringe Festival (DFF) has teamed up with the IETM Dublin organisers to create three unique events for meeting delegates. As well as an annual curated multi-disciplinary festival each September with up to 100 events, DFF runs the year-round FRINGE LAB which exists to support independent artists working at the experimental end of the performing arts. Many Irish artists working in performance who are now starting to create a name for themselves abroad had their first steps supported by the DFF team and continue to present work at the festival each September. As well as an annual curated multi-disciplinary festival each September with up to 100 events, DFF runs the year-round FRINGE LAB which exists to support independent artists working at the experimental end of the performing arts. Many Irish artists working in performance who are now starting to create a name for themselves abroad had their first steps supported by the DFF team and continue to present work at the festival each September. A devised show performed by Brokentalkers' Co-Artistic Director Feidlim Cannon, his mother Ann Cannon and their psychotherapist Erich Keller. Telling the story of the loss in tragic circumstances of Feidlim's father and youngest brother, it was created using recordings of therapy sessions attended by Feidlim and Ann over the course of a year. Brokentalkers have been creating and touring work since 2001. Recent work that has toured internationally includes The Blue Boy, Silver Stars and In Real Time. The performance will be prefaced by a short introduction by Co-Artistic Director Gary Keegan. A devised show performed by Brokentalkers' Co-Artistic Director Feidlim Cannon, his mother Ann Cannon and their psychotherapist Erich Keller. Telling the story of the loss in tragic circumstances of Feidlim's father and youngest brother, it was created using recordings of therapy sessions attended by Feidlim and Ann over the course of a year. Brokentalkers have been creating and touring work since 2001. Recent work that has toured internationally includes The Blue Boy, Silver Stars and In Real Time. The performance will be prefaced by a short introduction by Co-Artistic Director Gary Keegan. Besides discussing last year's reports and plans for 2013, the members will also decide on the new Board. Come and take an active part in the life of your network! This time, there is a change to the usual running order: in Dublin we will hold the General Assembly on Friday morning before the Plenary Session. There will be tea, coffee and pastries available to buy from 09:00, and registration will be moved to this venue throughout the morning. One thing we can all agree on: we’ve been betrayed. Who can we trust anymore? Internationally, economically, socially, politically – are we experiencing a trust crisis? We invite you and challenge you to take part in The Big Debate, which will take place over three sessions and is designed to be a stimulating conversation that will last the whole weekend. Dip in and out, or be involved from start to finish – it’s up to you. Each day will bring up new questions and topics, and will grow and develop from the day before. Two moderators will be on hand at all times to listen, contextualise, provoke and direct the proceedings. But the real meat of the discussion is what you bring to it. The Big Debate feeds the ‘multi-voices’ debate launched in 2013 by Culture Action Europe and enacted by its members across Europe. This debate is aimed at building a citizens' agenda for a sustainable and just society where culture and the arts are pillars. What place is there for culture when our societies are under strain? Do the ambitions of the network that is Europe still hold true? What are our responsibilities as cultural workers towards politics and politicians? What are our political responsibilities to our audiences? When trust has been broken between societies, between countries, what can we do to rebuild it? Questions, questions, questions. When performance makers choose to take inspiration from specific communities or what might be dubbed ‘marginalised discourses’, does this represent cultural appropriation or a daring collaboration? At best this type of work can open discussion, encourage cultural exchange and democratise artforms, and in the process shift the status quo or present a challenge to the complacent. At worse it can perpetuate tokenism and create another contemporary form of cultural imperialism. This session will introduce the work of artists collaborating with marginalised communities, showcase their working methods and examine questions around ethics, identity, audience and responsibility in order to open up discussion and interrogate how best to represent the complex realities of today’s world. This debate is aimed at building a citizens' agenda for a sustainable and just society where culture and the arts are pillars. What place is there for culture when our societies are under strain? Do the ambitions of the network that is Europe still hold true? What are our responsibilities as cultural workers towards politics and politicians? What are our political responsibilities to our audiences? When trust has been broken between societies, between countries, what can we do to rebuild it? Questions, questions, questions. When performance makers choose to take inspiration from specific communities or what might be dubbed ‘marginalised discourses’, does this represent cultural appropriation or a daring collaboration? At best this type of work can open discussion, encourage cultural exchange and democratise artforms, and in the process shift the status quo or present a challenge to the complacent. At worse it can perpetuate tokenism and create another contemporary form of cultural imperialism. This session will introduce the work of artists collaborating with marginalised communities, showcase their working methods and examine questions around ethics, identity, audience and responsibility in order to open up discussion and interrogate how best to represent the complex realities of today’s world. Many Irish artists working in performance who are now starting to create a name for themselves abroad had their first steps supported by the DFF team and continue to present work at the festival each September. Performance art from the visual arts has recently experienced a resurgence in Ireland, which has resulted in many Irish artists traveling and performing at live art and performance art venues and festivals throughout the world. To give you a taste of the powerful work being made in Ireland, the IETM Dublin organisers and Dublin City Council have commissioned three new pieces by internationally renowned performance artists. Spectral (my lake of eggs) by Áine Phillips, is a live performance where one woman embodies sumptuous madness, a sculptural entrapment and ecstatic anaesthesia. She recounts narratives of self-destruction, institutional care; embodying a freedom in madness that is stifled through societal attitudes, while producing a burning retina image of love and desire for life. Performance art from the visual arts has recently experienced a resurgence in Ireland, which has resulted in many Irish artists traveling and performing at live art and performance art venues and festivals throughout the world. To give you a taste of the powerful work being made in Ireland, the IETM Dublin organisers and Dublin City Council have commissioned three new pieces by internationally renowned performance artists. Michelle Browne and Dominic Thorpe come together in coun●ter●part to explore how two distinct performance practices find common ground in collaboration. The work draws out the potential and the tension that exists in the relationship between the two performers. Working through mark-making and interdependence, the performance explores the delicacy and intimacy in the collaborative act. Supported by Dublin City Council Genre: Performance Art Programmer’s Note Le spectacle issu des arts visuels connaît depuis peu une nouvelle jeunesse en Irlande. Beaucoup d’artistes irlandais voyagent et jouent dans des salles de spectacle et dans des festivals à travers le monde. A life of unending misery in a world devoid of God, now that’s funny. All That Fall is an atmospheric, intimate and multi-layered installation performance of Samuel Beckett’s 1956 radio play. This theatrically tuned listening chamber was created by Pan Pan, one of Ireland’s most influential contemporary theatre companies. Pan Pan have been making and touring work since 1991. Recent work that has toured internationally includes: A Doll House, Oedipus Loves You, The Crumb Trail and The Rehearsal, Playing The Dane. This performance will be prefaced by a short introduction by Artistic Director, Gavin Quinn. Genre: Theatre Programmer’s Note Une vie de perpétuel malheur dans un monde sans Dieu, quelle idée ! Tous ceux qui tombent est une adaptation intimiste et multidimensionnelle de la pièce radiophonique (1956) de Samuel Beckett qui vous plongera dans une ambiance très particulière. Jen Coppinger, theatre and dance producer, swims in the Irish Sea regularly and invites you to join her and some friends for a swim by James Joyce’s Martello tower at Seapoint. Come for the swim, the camaraderie, the majestic view of Dublin and for the hot cup of tea after. But most of all come for the chats – the honest and open conversations, and the sense of having achieved something together. Trust us, you’ll enjoy yourself!
