Help us to translate the IETM tagline!
Dear Members,
I hope everyone is doing well. As most of you know, a brand new IETM website and visual identity will be launched in the two coming months – exciting!
For this occasion, we would like to invite you to help us to translate the IETM tagline, “International network for contemporary performing arts”, in as many languages from across the globe as possible.
Want to contribute? The tagline will be displayed on three lines so, if possible, please post your translation in a comment to this post as follows:
*Name of the language*: International network / for contemporary / performing arts.
Do feel free to suggest another division if it cannot be divided in this way in your language.
Many thanks in advance for your contribution and see you very soon,
Jeremy Gobin
IETM Communication and Membership Manager
Hello !
Here's my proposal:
French: Réseau international / des arts vivants / contemporains.
Catalan: Xarxa internacional d'arts escèniques contemporànies. In catalan contemporary goes after performing arts and is separated of "for", so I can't use the proposed division.
Bulgarian: Международна мрежа / за съвременни / сценични изкуства
Hungarian:
Nemzetközi hálózat
a kortárs
előadóművészetért
French: Réseau international / pour les arts performatifs / contemporains.
Greek: Διεθνές δίκτυο / για σύγχρονες / παραστατικές τέχνες
Icelandic: Alþjóðlegt tengslanet í sviðslistum
In Arabic:
الشبكة الدولية لفنون الأداء المعاصرة
Italiano: Rete internazionale / per le arti performative / contemporanee
In italian I need to invert the second and third segment of the phrase (adjective goes after noun in this case).
In Slovak language it can be
“International network for contemporary performing arts”
Medzinárodná sieť pre súčasné scénické umenie
Lithuanian:
Tarptautinis tinklas/šiuolaikinis/scenos menai.
Tarptautinis šiuolaikinių scenos menų tinklas.
Irish: líonra idirnáisiúnta / na taibhealaíona / comhaimseartha
("international network" / "of the performing arts" / "contemporary"
Cymraeg (Welsh): Rhwydwaith rhyngwladol / ar gyfer celfyddydau / perfformio cyfoes
German: Internationales Netzwerk / für zeitgenössische / darstellende Künste
In Romanian: Rețea internațională / pentru artele performative / contemporane.
Portuguese: Rede Internacional / para as Artes Performativas / Contemporâneas
(adjective "contemporay" comes after noun "performing arts")
Международная сеть современного исполнительского искусства in Russian. Thanks for making me think about it :)
Persian:
I write it this way to make it easier to get the division.
International network: شبکۀ بین المللی
for contemporary performing arts: برای هنرهای نمایشی معاصر
P.S. We write from right to left, so please keep that in mind.
Maltese: Netwerk Internazzjonali / għall-Arti Performattivi / Kontemporanji
Latvian:
Starptautiskais tīkls / laikmetīgai / skatuves mākslai
In one line: IETM - "Starptautiskais laikmetīgās skatuves mākslas tīkls"
*Name of the language*: portuguese
International network / for contemporary / performing arts.
Rede internacional/ de artes performativas/ contemporâneas
Czech:
Mezinárodní síť / pro současné / performativní umění
Turkish: çağdaş / gösteri sanatları için / uluslararası iletişim ağı
Spanish. And confusion translating "for" in latin languages
Hello
I think the translation of "for" is confusing in latin languages as Catalan, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese .....
In Spanish could be both:
- Red internacional para las artes escénicas contemporáneas
or
- Red internacional de las artes escénicas contemporáneas
I prefer the second but I think the literal translation is the first.
The same in other latin languages.
Any oppinion?
Toni G.
Hello Toni,
yes, I hesitated on the Portuguese suggestion because of that; I ended up proposing "para as Artes Performativas /for the Performing Arts" as the literal translation, and Filipa Francisco added the alternative "de Artes Performativas /of Performing Arts".
I think it's a matter of how important is the "for" in the original english name - do we want to stress that the network is "for the Perfoming Arts" instead of "of Performing Arts"?
Or is it not that important and it should be just what sounds better or more natural in each language?
Yes. Very well explained Ana. Thank you.
Toni G.
Yes I agree
Dear Toni, Ana and Filipa,
Thank you for this interesting discussion and for your contributions. Your comments are very relevant, and although both translations would be grammatically correct, I personnally would suggest we use the direct translation of "for" (= not as in "of") because I feel like it reflects more the idea and purpose of the network (for instance, in French, we translated it as pour les arts du spectacle not as des arts du spectacle).
Would you agree?
Thanks again,
Jeremy
Yes I agree,
best
Filipa
Hi Jeremy,
It's perfect, no problem.

Albanian: "Rrjet ndërkombëtar për arte skenike bashkëkohore"
As in some other languages also in Albanian adjective is after the noun so:
Albanian: Rrjet ndërkombëtar / për arte skenike / bashkëkohore.
English : International network / for performing arts / contemporary.
