IETM ITALY Meeting, April 9th 11.00
Ciao italiani!
Spero che voi e i vostri cari stiate bene in questo momento così complicato.
During the last IETM Members’ Zoom Room, it was proposed to hold meetings of members by country. As sometimes mentioned during IETM meetings, Italian IETM members don't have so many chances to speak and meet in Italy: let's use this chance to reconnect a bit and find together support and, maybe, even some solutions.
IETM ITALY meeting is set for Thursday 9th April, 11.00 - 12.30 CET (alias, le 11 ora italiana). We will use Zoom and speak Italian.

Anche io!
Spero di essere presente anche io!!
ciao

A giovedì.
Spero di esserci anche io almeno fino alle 12 grazie!
presente... a dopo!!!
REPORT OF THE MEETING - feel free to comment, chat and add here below!
OUR VIEW ON THE CRISIS:
the Italian lockdown was severe since its beginning, with every activities cancelled. International cooperation (in&out) is postponed (if not cancelled) to an unknown future, since we are also dealing with a different timeline than other countries.
We are dealing differently with the support measures, since they are very diverse: that's a huge complication, we don't have a general view and still need a lot to support to find the answers. Actually, even if the measures have been put in place, the timing of getting them are not sure and too set in advance (e.g.: unemployment benefit expected in not less than two months).
We are mostly worried about:
- the situation of the more fragile component of our sectors (artists, freelancers);
- reaction of the audience post crisis and how to keep the relationship alive right now;
- the amount of "improvisation" happening online right now, tackling a national already existing problem about the difference between professionalism and amateur;
- psychological dimension is not to be underestimated, we are dealing with a difficult moment that are putting us in various difficult places;
- Italian system is not very good at solidarity and cooperation, that are mostly needed now;
- we are talking about online, but situation with school proved that 15% Italian families have no device at all, we are not reaching "everyone".
GOING DIGITAL:
digital dimension came out several time during our discussion. We mostly agree that we don't feel really relevant to just "show" some fixed camera videos of past performances, that were not recorded for the online streaming: the real challenge is to create something new out of the situation.
Everyone is experimenting (in very exciting ways!): tailored on contents, podcasts, one to one performances, partecipatory processes, artistic practice exchanges.
While we are using this chance to learn a little bit more about all our possibilities to interact online and to use better the technology, it's also distracting: our work is born for the stage, everything we are doing now can improve us, but never substitute the live performance.
We have not a real competence on technology, we can just use the time to experiment, but those creations need to end on stage as well, somehow.
Also, how can we earn money for a online show? Is that possible to have the audience pay? Some projects will try that in the upcoming weeks.
OUR REACTIONS:
as previously said, everyone is adapting to the digital context and somehow going online. If possible, some projects are kept alive through digital, creating a fil rouge for the future.
C.Re.S.Co. is working a lot (and well) on national advocacy, Fitzcarraldo is collecting data and working on a special monitoring on the sector (and its workers!) with already an agreement with 4 Regions to implement it and text it. It's important to identify who is not included in the measures taken by the government and to voice them.
There is a general rethinking of our activities, also on a personal levels about needs and goals for the future.
This crisis can be, in fact, a precious moment to really rethink the future and also to set up a different identity of the sector:
- more solidarity;
- more cooperation;
- underlining the importance of culture with the audience (how culture is important in difficult times, the fuition is massive while in the "normal" society culture is negatively evaluated);
- implementing tools to really map the sector and provide the missing info to institutions.
WHAT WE CAN DO TOGETHER AND WITH IETM:
the chance to meet and discuss is really valuable and we deeply need that. This meeting and the others put in place by IETM are very appreciated. IETM can be the place where we start a better cooperation and solidarity process, to be implemented also on national level.
The international situation being so confused and different from country to country, the role of IETM can also be the one of giving the general overview, providing info but also advocating for common policies around Europe (e.g.: timing and rules for art mobility in the phase 2 of the crisis).
The mapping and data are more important than ever, also a common view taken to Europe is relevant, mapping the "invisible".
We can have a positive view on international level about digital, but only with the long term view of going live in the end (not only on stage but for mobility too!).
FINAL RECCOMENDATION:
let’s try to understand what is happening now that is positive for the sector and we need to focus on / start from for a new future.
