Bio
Theater im Delphi is a new center for arts and culture in the protected historic landmark building of the former silent film cinema Delphi in Berlin Weißensee, adjacent to Prenzlauer Berg. Planned by Julius Krost and opened in 1929 with 870 seats, the building is considered the last originally preserved silent film cinema of the legendary “Filmstadt Weißensee". In 1959 the cinema was closed, and various interim uses followed. For fifty years the house slumbered like a hidden jewel, until 2012 when the artists Brina Stinehelfer (New York) and Nikolaus Schneider (Dresden) discovered it and created a lively place for a wide spectrum of events: theater, dance, opera, concerts, performances, forums, exhibitions and many hybrid projects, especially those that think "outside the (black) box" find a home here. The production and performance venue offers a unique atmosphere and aesthetics, characterized by the special stage portal, the high vaulted ceiling, the cabaret seating and the morbid patina on the walls. Due to the excellent room acoustics, music theater is a special programmatic focus. Artists are also invited to redesign their ideas here or be inspired by the peculiarities of the place to create new concepts. In addition, the theater honours the artistic visionaries of the past with events that pay tribute to Berlin's rich cultural history, especially the silent film era. In 2016, the Swiss Edith Maryon Foundation bought the building in order to secure it together with Stinehelfer and Schneider for permanent use as a public cultural venue. Theater im Delphi belongs to the cultural heritage of Berlin and its artistic face of the future.
