"Themes" is a stream of content generated or created by both IETM staff and our members. In focus are the subjects we consider essential in the contemporary performing arts today: the relationship with the audience, EU cultural policies, diversity & inclusion, sustainability of the sector, the value of the arts in society, and the paradigms, challenges and aspirations faced by the sector in different parts of the globe.

Departing from the current political, economic, humanitarian, and environmental crises of Europe, this session at IETM Munich gathered ideas to revive democracy and the European project, while rejecting ultra-nationalist parties that demand separation from the European Union and seek to return to a mythical notion of the nation-state, as well as the political-economical functionary elite that has used the EU for its austerity politics.
Why should we do participatory work? Is it possible for cultural institutions to manage cultural democracy? What are the power structures underlying participatory practices? To what extent is the participatory agenda aligned with the neoliberal agenda? How can we rethink participatory theatre? These questions were at the heart of the discussions of this IETM Munich session.

“We are not producing artists; we are creating leaders in society," said Juliano Mer Khamis, the leader of Freedom Theatre who was assassinated seven years ago. Freedom Theater reopend its theatre school, working alongside ASHTAR Theatre and Al Rowwad, to bring perspective in the lives of many young people in Palestine, a country with a high percentage of youngsters and an even higher percentage of unemployment.
