If art is to be relevant to the environment, it needs to move beyond an art context to engage with the land itself. New evidence of a Southern Pacific Garbage patch has been found. Longtime combatant of oceanic plastic Captain Charles Moore has published new findings that further detail the concentrated amount of plastic in the South Pacific Garbage Patch near Chile and Peru, with his NGO Algalita, which is dedicated to finding solutions to plastic waste choking the oceans. The Southern Pacific Garbage patch is now believed to be larger than Mexico.

Growing up I did follow world events and I read an actual newspaper -- every day. Several key events stand out in my adolescent/teenage mind -- the 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre, AIDS activists storming Saint Patrick’s Cathedral to interrupt a mass held by Cardinal John O’Connor, and the 1995 genocide in the Bosnian town of Srebrenica.

Metrics-based approaches to understanding the value of culture imply homogeneity of artistic purpose, invite political manipulation and demand time, money and attention from cultural organisations without proven benefit.
Hard-working artisan, solitary genius, credentialed professional—the image of the artist has changed radically over the centuries. What if the latest model to emerge means the end of art as we have known it?
While the media and popular culture may portray refugee camps mainly as places of desperation, human rights workers know that they are complex communities teeming with economic, social, and artistic life. Social-justice oriented theater professionals have found refugee camps to be a vital and vibrant place to practice their craft. But like any human rights or social justice work, refugee theater projects must be culturally sensitive and ethically-responsible.
The inclusion of migrants and refugees: the role of cultural organisations
Where to start? What do we need to know? What to do and how? These are frequently asked questions among cultural professionals interested in contributing to the inclusion of migrants and refugees in our societies. It is necessary to have access to the knowledge and tools that will allow us to reflect on the situation we are currently facing and to develop programmes and actions that can address the concerns and needs of the society, including those of the newcomers. With this publication, Portugues organisation Acesso Cultura aims to help meeting some of these needs.
