Performance in Serbian and Slovenian with English subtitles

Haris Pasovic, a world-renowned director, whose glittering achievements have been staged in Belgrade theatres, presents August Strindberg’s play Miss Julie at the Madleninum.

Set in contemporary Slovenia, Julie is the daughter of a Slovenian mogul who is no more an aristocrat, but her ancestors were. At the same time, Jean, her servant who comes from Serbia, is a Gastarbeiter (guest worker) who earns a living at her father’s estate. The play explores the class and gender dynamics between the two.

Just like in the play, the story happens during the nightly celebration where alcohol, sleeplessness and a party atmosphere lead to acts of passion between the main two characters, ultimately to their regrets. This concept gives Pasovic a possibility to spotlight the economic inequality that exists between the EU and non-EU citizens.

Sara Dirnbek, who plays Julie, and Mina Pavlica, who plays Jean, bring Miss Julie to life on stage, alongside a sterling ensemble cast, as a contemporary up to date love story.
