Digital community - opportunities and challenges

.

Digital technologies have brought us into a world of instantaneity and interaction without intermediaries, inviting anyone to participate in society. One may assume we are moving towards a greater, bottom-up, direct democracy. But this phenomena of participation came along its own scheme of exclusion. Thus, every cultural and artistic institution, no matter what their size, risks to lose credibility if it doesn’t make use of digital tools. Sharing about what is happening in the black box across several digital platforms has become an overwhelming necessity, especially when our resources are limited. But what have we - artists, cultural institutions and audiences - gained in the knowledge of the other, in the quality of the interaction? Is digital an effective tool of inclusion and emancipation or, on the contrary, does it turn us and our practices into stereotypes?

Hello again
Vuk who is going to be our speaker at this session has sent me a "ad-hoc glossary of missing expressions pertinent to our debate". I would like to share it with you here in anticipation of our meeting. Enjoy!

Schrödinger's catwalk: Impossible and apparently unsolvable paradox of being pressured to participate in the promotional engine of social media while understanding that it is detrimental to your reputation as independent (cultural) social actor.

Oppenheimer knödl: Unlike the field of physics that had it's moment of ethical reckoning after the Manhattan project, the field of computing didn't have it's own cathartic denouncement of the creation of the monster.

Braudello wallpaper: The depressing feeling that each generation of (media) artists is only cyclically re-decorating the perpetuation of fixed social relationships regardless of the very temporary pockets of resistance.

Marx Zuckerberg: A special aroma of cognitive dissonance of being an anti-capitalist exclusively active on Facebook.

Bretton Woodstock: Lightness of mind displayed by baby boomers generation while destroying the global financial order and overall geo-political balance.

Virtually Performing the Space

The goal of this session in IETM Budapest was to discuss the opportunities and risks created by social media platforms, which can also be used by the performing art sector. Can the digital tools enable their users to express what they want and how they want?

Who's afraid of the digital?

A cultural operator and an expert of online surveillance engage in a lively dialogue about the potential and the risks of new technologies and social media - and about existing alternatives to the current trends.

Social Media Toolkit for Cultural Managers

This social media manual approaches useful hints and tips which have been drawn together from a series of workshops that took place in June 2016 by Christopher Hogg and colleagues. Aimed at arts and culture organisations throughout the EU, this manual will help to explore how companies can expand their online brand so as to push both the reach and significance of their current efforts.
