Language barriers

Language, under all its forms, is our best way to communicate and engage. Yet it is also a powerful tool used for discrimination in relation to social class, spoken versus signed language, and national versus regional dialect.

In this panel discussion, we’ll discuss how we can overcome these language barriers and set an inclusive communication tool.

Notes from small group - how do we engage with others whose views are different?

"I do not like that man. I must find out more about him." Abraham Lincoln

We were wondering:

- if different doesn't always mean opposite

- how we can respect people's lived experiences that have formed their opinions

- which battles we pick based on how much emotional labour they may take

- whether we all have the right to remain opaque/ not completely understood

- how to listen to listen and not just listen to react

- what it means to engage? maybe give full attention to? maybe it's like a gear in car, a mechanism we shift into becoming active in doing so

- how we come with curiousity to achieve clarity

- how much definitions and langauge create this in the first place - eg all the potential definitions of a the word 'quota'
