Africonnexions
Ongoing platform for exchange and cooperation with and within Africa
Introduction
At the IETM Annual Plenary Meeting in Trieste (April 2002), Mark Deputter launched a meeting group asking,
“Are IETM members interested in collaborating with African professionals?”
The next 2 hours of discussion in the packed room was evidence enough - the answer was yes!
As a follow-up (prompted by and in collaboration with Isabel Bosman), lETM conducted a small survey amongst its members later that year (October 2002),
- To measure their interest in collaborating with Africa
- To find out what co-operation and exchange projects already existed with Africa, particularly in contemporary dance.
- To identify any obstacles
The replies to the survey were overwhelmingly rapid, numerous and lively.
Given this interest, IETM started a pilot project to work alongside others (such as Cultures France (formerly AFAA), the CND –Centre national de la danse- and Danças na Cidade to promote debate in Europe concerning North-South co-operation and to facilitate even more encounters between professionals in Africa and Europe.
We were immediately invited by the project of Africalia (based in Belgium), to co organise a conference and platform in Brussels on contemporary dance in Africa: AFRICONNEXIONS … That early name has remained alive as the name of the ongoing networking project.
