Recreating the Berlin wall with 33.000 people

From 09-11-09 till 09-11-09 - Berlin, Germany

Performance - Europe - posted by IETM on 03.11.09

British performance-artist und curator Martin Butler wants to rebuild the Berlin Wall – not out of steel, concrete and barbed wire, but with people.

On 9th November 33.000 will form a line in Berlin, marking the path, where the Berlin Wall once stood. They build a human chain at 8.15 pm, keep it nearly 15 minutes and tear down the wall symbolicly - just at that point of time, as masses of people got together at wall after breaking news.

Butler calls his project "Mauer Mob. 2009 - Recreating the Berlin Wall", a "temporary monument for reflection“. Because the Berlin Wall was the clearest und most brutal separator between people in east and west.

„Mauer-Mob. 2009“ remembers, how Berlin and Europe became one this day. It is a sign, a rebellious statement: Such separators out of weapons and concrete are not acceptable in today‘s society, they must and will not happen again. Borders are past.

By now thousands of people in the online-comunity facebook assured their support.

On mauer-mob.com
everybody can register and mark his place in the human chain with 330 groups out of 100 people. By now people from Germany, Europe, from all over the world signed in.

This is not a project from above, no state, no organisation. It is a compaign from people themselves, who made the fall of wall 20 years ago possible. They want to remember and experience, where the wall stood and what every single man or woman can move as a part of a group. We can change the world!
