Ongoing platform for exchange and cooperation with and within Mediteranean countries
Introduction
When Mary Ann De Vlieg was appointed to head the IETM Secretariat in 1994 the IETM President at that time (Anne Bieler) told her that she would be responsible for a new initiative – “developing links with ‘the South’ “
“We made a few stumbling steps (especially trying to determine what was 'south’), notably a great working group at the IETM meeting in Seville (Spring 1995) - called 'South of Who, East of What?' - which put geography into different perspectives!"
Since then, the artistic landscape has changed dramatically, evident in international exhibitions, festivals and biennales. The Young Arab Theatre Fund (YATF) and the Roberto Cimetta Fund, to name just two of IETM’s colleague-organisations, have sought and identified some of the most exciting fresh creators and producers. IETM has encouraged partnerships and facilitated the development of new projects and networks both in and with the region.
There are new reasons for continuing to develop relations with the Mediterranean countries. As IETM's current President, Nan van Houte, commented:
“..the Mediterranean must be one of IETM's highest priorities, given the changing composition of our European cities, the new generation of extremely interesting young artists in the Arab world, and the dynamic rate of change and of potential in the creative landscape of the Arab world. It is also important to recognise that, like Europe, IETM was born in the Mediterranean - our first roots will always remain in the small village of Polverigi, Italy.”

This is an invitation to IETM members to inform yourselves of the BDS (Boycott, Divest, Sanction) movement and the PACBI (call by academics, intellectuals and artists for a boycott of Israeli institutions - not individuals) both of which were launched some years ago, calling for people all over the world to take non-violent action to make their concerns felt about actions of the Israeli government vis-à-vis the Occupied Territories in Palestine.
